Hey y’all, let’s be real.
Sometimes life can become one day after another of the same old routine — waking up to your alarm clock, heading out to work, coming home and getting the house in order, watching TV, going to bed, and repeat. It can suck the soul right out of you – and it’s exhausting! On top of that, it seems like as women, we find an endless supply of things to worry about, day in and day out.
When you’re overwhelmed and stressed out, it can feel like you have the weight of the world on your shoulders — and your time becomes all about getting done what you can, when you can, and (if possible) collapsing afterwards.
Your life becomes all about functionality.
Now, I’m not knocking functionality. It’s completely necessary and helpful, obviously — but it sure can be a bleak place to live your life from. Your whole world can begin to feel gray and flat… automated, in a sense.
When you start to get into this rhythm, it’s important to stop and take inventory:
– How are you caring for yourself right now?
– Are you caring for yourself right now?
And let me just say, “taking care of yourself” doesn’t have to be just another chore on your endless list of to-do’s. In fact, in this case I’m going to recommend something that you might not be expecting…
If your daily routine is falling flat, and you’re struggling with motivation, energy, and inspiration — I have a challenge for you:
Every day, for the next week, add one bit of silly, frivolous fun into your day. Fun with no other purpose than to make you smile!
Fun is one of the first things that falls by the wayside when life gets stressful. It can feel self-indulgent, like, “Are you crazy? I don’t have time for that!”
But consider this:
(1) This is not something I’m asking you to sacrifice your precious time for. Not at all! Adding a bit of fun into your day can mean anything from turning up your favorite song and busting a move in your car on the way to work, to wearing hot pink lipstick that makes you feel like a badass, to doing a sudoku on your coffee break, or just taking a minute to enjoy sharing a belly laugh with your bestie.
Of course, you kinda have to choose your own adventure here — I can’t say what will bring a smile to your face and a bit of joy into your heart today. What I do know is that it does not and should not feel like a chore, and it doesn’t have to take any extra time out of your day.
(2) Making it a priority to have fun every day, no matter how stressed or strapped for time you are (and, actually, especially then) helps keep you sane and happy. It injects a little pop of color into the grind of everyday life. So don’t forget to add little moments of joy into your life… It’s not self-indulgent, it is life-giving.
Don’t let your fun be the sacrifice you make when other things start slipping by the wayside.
Remember it, honor it, and invite it in to refuel your soul.
